How do I know if I'm a good candidate for laser vision correction of nearsightedness, farsightedness, and/or astigmatism?

The great majority of all nearsighted, farsighted, and astigmatic Americans are potential candidates for the treatment. Typically, patients who are at least 21 years of age and have nearsightedness, farsightedness, or astigmatism. However, only our eye doctors, who are specially trained in laser correction of nearsightedness, farsightedness, and/or astigmatism can evaluate your suitability for the treatment.

How long does the treatment take? How long will my recovery be?

The laser treatment itself takes about 15-40 seconds, based on the degree of correction necessary. Typically, you'll notice improvement in your sight in 3-5 days following the treatment, and you can usually go back to work the next day. Recovery varies based on each individual's own healing time. In most cases, both eyes will be corrected during the same visit to our facility.

How do I know it's safe?

Clinical trials of laser vision correction have been ongoing for many years. The Excimer Laser has been proven safe and effective for the treatment of the majority of nearsighted, farsighted, and astigmatism corrections. In the U.S. clinical trials' three-year follow-up, no sight-threatening complications have occurred. Over 2 million treatments have been performed in the U.S. since 1996. (2 Million procedures are expected to be completed each year)

What are the side effects?

The most common side effects are dry eyes, a "halo" effect, and some glare at night around lights. However, these problems are no worse than what most contact lens and eyeglass wearers often experience and usually diminish or disappear within 6 months of surgery.

Will I be in any pain?

The treatment itself is painless. You may feel a pressure feeling during the IntraLase procedure. Typically, people experience discomfort and a "gritty" feeling during the first 2 to 4 hours after the treatment. Patients who are treated will be given medications they can use to control any discomfort they might experience.

Can I afford the treatment?

Eyeglasses usually have to be replaced once a year or so. And contact lenses - depending on the type you use - can be extremely costly, especially when you add in the cost of solutions. You'll find that laser vision correction can probably pay for itself in a few years time. Talk about it with your doctor. Zero Percent financing for up to 24 months we have made available to qualified candidates.

Who is a Candidate for the Advanced CustomVue? Procedure?

The Broadest Range of Approvals for Wavefront-Guided Laser Vision Correction

  • 21 years of age or older.
  • If you're nearsighted or farsighted, and even if you have astigmatism or mixed astigmatism, Advanced CustomVue? laser vision correction can potentially help you achieve a new level of vision - your Personal Best Vision.
  • We will determine if you're a candidate for the Advanced CustomVue? procedure during your complimentary consultation.

Myopia

  • Myopia: Also known as nearsightedness, is the refractive error in which vision is better for near objects than for distant objects.

Advanced CustomVue? Results for Myopia

In the FDA Clinical Study, One Year After the Procedure:

  • 100% of people could pass a driving test without glasses or contact lenses.
  • 98% of people could see 20/20 or better without glasses or contact lenses.
  • 70% of people could see better than 20/20 without glasses or contact lenses.

Advanced CustomVue? Results for High Myopia

In the FDA Clinical Study:

  • 84 percent of patients achieved 20/20 or better vision six months postoperatively without glasses or contact lenses.
  • 65 percent of patients achieved 20/16 or better vision six months postoperatively without glasses or contact lenses.
  • 78 percent of patients had the same or better vision postoperatively without glasses or contact lenses than preoperatively with glasses or contact lenses.
  • More than 75 percent of patients experienced the benefit of no change or an increase in contrast sensitivity under all tested conditions.
  • Overall, only 2.2 percent of eyes in the clinical trial required re-treatment.

Hyperopia

  • Hyperopia: Also known as farsightedness, is the refractive error in which vision is better for distant objects than for near objects.

Advanced CustomVue? Results for Hyperopia

In the FDA Clinical Study, Six Months After the Procedure:

  • More than four times as many participants were very satisfied with their night vision after the Advanced CustomVue Hyperopia procedure compared to their night vision before with glasses or contact lenses.

Astigmatism and Mixed Astigmatism

  • Astigmatism: The normal cornea is round, like a basketball. Astigmatism causes the cornea to be shaped more like a football or an egg. This causes distortion in vision.
  • Mixed Astigmatism: Now an effective Advanced CustomVue? treatment exists for mixed astigmatism patients who are especially challenging to treat. As shown in the clinical study, patients with mixed astigmatism now have the potential to achieve better vision than is possible with glasses or contact lenses.

Advanced CustomVue? Results for Mixed Astigmatism*

In the FDA Clinical Study:

  • The Advanced CustomVue procedure for mixed astigmatism may improve vision beyond the correction possible with contact lenses or glasses.
  • Nearly twice as many patients were very satisfied with their night vision after the custom wavefront procedure than before with glasses and contact lenses.

How Does LASIK Work?

LASIK is a Laser Vision Correction procedure designed to treat nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. It does so by reshaping the surface of the cornea to bring your vision into focus.

Dr. Jack T. Holladay is one of the nation's leading vision correction specialists. He has already helped thousands of patients regain clearer, natural vision through Excimer Laser LASIK.

How LASIK Works

LASIK is a highly specialized procedure that uses the precise vision correction beam of the Excimer Laser. By combining these two procedures, Dr. Holladay is able to correct higher degrees of nearsightedness and farsightedness than possible through PRK.

Intralase is rapidly becoming known as the key ingredient to optimizing visual results in laser vision correction surgery. This exceptional technology, known as Intralase FS-60 laser, provides a less invasive, computer controlled approach to the important first step of the laser vision correction procedure. Read more on our Intralase LASIK page. The first step in the LASIK procedure is to create a flap of tissue on the cornea of the eye.

This is done using the IntraLase FS-60 Laser. This highly precise laser generated flap of tissue is then placed back to expose the underlying surface of the cornea where the laser energy will be applied.

Once the cornea flap has been positioned, Dr. Holladay then uses a computer-selected amount of laser energy to remove the desired amount of cornea tissue for laser correction. This normally takes just a few seconds to complete.

Once the desired amount of laser correction has been applied, the corneal flap is placed into its original position and allowed to heal. No sutures are required to hold the corneal flap in place.

Dr. Holladay performs all of these procedures with the use of topical anesthesia. Injections of anesthesia are not used. This helps our patients see better in a shorter period of time.

The LASIK procedure takes just seconds to complete, and your total time at our facility is usually less than one hour. Many of our patients come in on a Wednesday to have their vision corrected, and return to work the following day.
Schedule Your FREE Comprehensive Vision Screening

Excimer Laser LASIK is Very Affordable

Many patients have discovered that Excimer Laser LASIK is a very affordable alternative to glasses and contact lenses. When you consider how much you will spend on frames, lenses, contact lenses, cleaning solutions and eye exams, you will see how LASIK is a practical alternative.
