Blade-Less LASIK?

Did you know that there is new LASIK technology that doesn't involve the use of a blade?

Although LASIK is a procedure that uses a laser to correct vision, the procedure still requires a blade called a microkeratome to cut a hole in your cornea so the laser can pass through and make the correction. Think of it as a scalpel for the eye.

The idea of a blade "cutting into" the eye has been a huge fear for many people who have considered LASIK and may have also been the reason for people to not go through with the procedure.

With IntraLase, there's no blade cutting the eye to make the corneal flap, instead just like a laser used to make corrections to the inner cornea, a laser is used to cut the flap on the outer cornea.

IntraLase Method vs Microkeratome Method

The microkeratome is a hand-held instrument, which contains a steel blade that moves back and forth and creates a cut as it travels across the cornea. A microkeratome is only capable of making a single, one-dimensional cut across the cornea. As it cuts, the blade oscillates back and forth, which can leave an irregular surface after the flap is lifted. This can affect the quality of your postoperative vision.

Because of the unique way in which the IntraLase Method creates a precisely positioned layer of bubbles just beneath the surface of your eye, it creates a smooth even surface after your flap is lifted. With the IntraLase Method, a blade never touches your eye.

Dr. Maloney's Guidelines for Quality Care and Treatment

A few Important tips from Robert K. Maloney, MD of Los Angeles, CA

Dr. Maloney reminds us not to be fooled by fancy advertisements about a particular laser center. It's important that we choose the doctor and not the laser center. Finding out who will perform the actual procedure should be a priority along with finding out about that doctor's qualifications.

The doctor should have at least 5,000 LASIK surgeries under his belt. What a doctor doesn't know, can and will hurt you.

It's also important that you know the doctor's complication rates during surgery. Dr. Maloney stresses that if they don't tell you, it's time to find another doctor. Top surgeons have a 3 in 1,000 complication rate.

Realistic Expectations

It's important to have realistic expectations when going in for your LASIK surgery. The last thing you want to do is set yourself up with high expectations and become disappointed with the result.

You should expect to see much better than you normally did after LASIK, however, you shouldn't expect to see perfectly. Everyone's eye and issue is different, so everyone gets a slightly different result. Keep in mind, even the best surgeon in the world can't promise 20/20 vision and you should be very weary of someone who does.

Always keep a good head about LASIK and other vision correction surgeries. Get more information at Eye Surgery USA.

Understanding Your Prescription

If you've seen the vision prescription your optometrist or ophthalmologist prepares following an eye exam, you've probably seen a series of positive or negative numbers, one for each eye. These values are known as diopters, and they typically measure the refractive power of your eyes on a scale of -14 to +14. A person with 20/20 vision will most likely have a reading of zero diopters. A person with myopia or nearsightedness would have a negative diopter value; a person diagnosed with hyperopia or farsightedness would have a positive diopter value.

Regardless of whether the number is negative or positive, a higher number indicates a higher refractive error. Your prescription specifies just how much vision correction is required to correct your particular vision problems.

Cataracts and Treatment

A cataract is a cloudy area in the lens of the eye which is in the front of the eye and normally clear. Even though there is no pain associated with cataracts, there are other problems it poses such as blurry vision, spots in front of the eye, sensitivity to glare and seeing a "film" of sorts on the eye.

Usually cataracts are found in people over 55 years old, those with eye injury or disease, a family history of cataracts, smoking or use of certain medications.

People who come in seeking help for their cataracts usually get lens replacement surgery. During the surgery the lens is removed and replaced with an artificial lens called an IOL or intraocular lens.

Quick Treatment, Quicker Recovery.

With your eyes under a laser and knife and being able to "see" the procedure happen, it can be quite frightening to think about how the procedure will pan out. Luckily, the actual laser treatment only takes about 15-40 seconds - depending on the degree of vision correction needed.

When the procedure is done, you'll most likely start to see improvement in about 3-5 days. In most cases people go back to work the day after the procedure.

If you want to know more about LASIK and other Laser Eye Surgery procedures, visit Eye Surgery USA today.

Is there a Painful Truth to Eye Surgery?

Most people have a fear of getting anything treated in relation to the eye. So the idea of even having surgery done on the eye, laser or not, can be quite frightening. And the pain, oh the possible pain!

Well the good news is, that in most cases, with anesthetic eye drops, the procedure should be quite comfortable. Some patients, when they return home experience mild irritation, light sensitivity or watery eyes - similar to having your contacts in for too long, and in most cases, it can be managed with over the counter pain killers.

If you have more questions and are curious about eye surgery, or LASIK procedures, visit Eye Surgery USA today.

I can see clearly - why do I need an eye exam?

A complete eye exam is more than just updating your prescription for glasses or contacts. Your eye examination by an ophthalmologist consists of a series of tests to assess the overall health of your eyes. Your doctor also checks for eye conditions such as glaucoma, cataract, diabetes, hypertension, retinal detachments, etc.

How is the IntraLase Method different from Epi-LASIK or photo-refractive keratectomy (PRK)?

These procedures differ from one another in the way they prepare the surface of the cornea for the second step of LASIK. Epi-LASIK uses an epikeratome - a blunt separator - to make a superficial flap. Similarly, photo-refractive keratectomy (PRK) is performed by gently scraping the surface layer of the cornea, which may lead to corneal scarring. Both the Epi-LASIK and PRK procedures can be painful and require more postoperative medication. In addition, healing times may be longer than with procedures performed with the IntraLase Method.

Help for Aging Eyes Without Lasers or Glasses

Can you read this? How about this? Close up vision often erodes with age, but most baby boomers would rather fumble with reading glasses than rush for eye surgery. The otherwise popular LASIK uses lasers to cut and reshape the cornea, and in rare cases it can cause scaring or infection. People of a certain age, it seems, don't like their eyes sliced. Now Conductive Keratoplasty - a new three-minute, outpatient, slice-free technique - helps safely restore close vision in farsighted folks and is recommended for those over age 40. Last week at the annual meeting of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, researchers announced that the procedure, abbreviated as CK, restored normal vision in 93 percent of patients over the two years of study.

Information on Glaucoma

Glaucoma is a leading cause of blindness in the U.S. It occurs when the pressure inside the eye rises, damaging the optic nerve and causing vision loss. The condition often develops over many years without causing pain or other noticeable symptoms - so you may not experience vision loss until the disease has progressed.

Symptoms that you could be developing glaucoma include blurred vision, loss of peripheral vision, halo effects around lights, and painful or reddened eyes. People at high risk include those who are over the age of 40, diabetic, near-sighted, African-American, or who have a family history of glaucoma.

To detect glaucoma, your physician will test your visual acuity and visual field as well as the pressure in your eye. Regular eye exams help to monitor the changes in your eyesight and to determine whether you may develop glaucoma.
