What is LASIK?

LASIK is a minimally invasive surgical procedure that reduces and in most cases eliminates the dependency on vision assisted appliances such as glasses and contact lenses.

LASIK is an acronym for Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis and is a procedure that permanently changes the shape of the cornea, the clear covering of the front of the eye, using an excimer laser. A knife, called a microkeratome, is used to cut a flap in the cornea. The flap is folded back revealing the stroma or the middle section of the cornea. Pulses from a computer-controlled laser cut a portion of the stroma and the flap of the cornea is replaced. There are other techniques related to LASIK, some that do not involve cutting.

Permanent Blade-less Vision Correction

You've heard about the revolutionary vision correction surgery that doesn't involve the use of a blade?

Blade-less LASIK

It's safe, convenient and very popular. The idea of a blade "cutting into" the eye has been a huge fear for many people who have considered LASIK and may have also been the reason for people to not go through with the procedure.

The truth is that, although LASIK is a procedure that uses a laser to correct vision, the procedure still requires a blade called a microkeratome to cut a hole in your cornea so the laser can pass through and make the correction. Think of it as a scalpel for the eye.

With IntraLase, there's no blade cutting the eye to make the corneal flap, instead just like a laser used to make corrections to the inner cornea, a laser is used to cut the flap on the outer cornea.

Read more about the specific details on how IntraLase works at Eye Surgery USA.

What is Conductive Keratoplasty?

Conductive Keratoplasty is a type of Vision Correction that uses radio waves, instead of a laser or scalpel, to reshape the cornea and bring near vision back into focus. CK is performed using a small probe, thinner than a strand of human hair, that releases radio waves. The probe is applied in a circular pattern on the outer cornea to shrink small areas of collagen. This circular shrinkage pattern creates a constrictive band (like the tightening of a belt), increasing overall curvature of the cornea. The procedure, which takes less than three minutes, is done in-office with only topical anesthesia (eye drops).

Cataract Surgery Can Be Restore Your Sight!

Do you suffer from cataracts?

Feel like you're too young to have cataracts, but your doctor wants you to be tested?

Here is some helpful information on what cataracts are and the options available today for living cataract free:

A cataract is a clouding (usually gradual) of the eye's natural lens. Most adults over age 60 have symptoms of cataracts, but they can effect adults as young as 55 or younger. A cataract can be the reason sharp images become blurred, or seeing things at night is more difficult. It may also be why the eyeglasses or contact lenses that used to help you read, or do other simple tasks, no longer seem to help.

More than a million cataract operations will be performed nationwide this year alone. What are the symptoms of a cataract? Because the cloudy lens allows less light to reach the retina, distance and/or reading vision is often fuzzy and indistinct through the affected eye.

Other key symptoms of cataracts:
  • Difficulty reading small print such as the newspaper
  • Difficulty driving, especially at night
  • Annoying glare from sunlight and or car headlights
  • Cloudy or hazy vision
  • Diminished color perception

LASIK Eye Correction Treatment - What Can I Expect?

The laser treatment itself takes about 15-40 seconds, based on the degree of correction necessary. Typically, you'll notice improvement in your sight in 3-5 days following the treatment, and you can usually go back to work the next day. Recovery varies based on each individual's own healing time. In most cases, both eyes will be corrected during the same visit to our facility.

Why Eye Examinations are Important

Visual field testing is a process to determine defects in the field of vision and tests the function of the retina, optic nerve and optic pathways. The visual field is tested as a regular part of an eye examination. It may also be tested if you notice specific changes in vision, for example, if you keep bumping into objects on one side. If there is a question about your vision, advanced visual field testing with sophisticated equipments is recommended.

An important step towards maintaining a good health of your eyes is the early detection of conditions such as cataracts, glaucoma and systemic diseases. We examine the whole eye and visual system for any indication of abnormalities. Through complete, regular eye exams, damage from glaucoma and other eye diseases can be detected at an early stage.

Fluid pressure inside the eye is measured using a tonometer to determine if you are a possible glaucoma patient. Optic nerve is damaged due to increased intra-ocular pressure in glaucoma. If there is a slightest doubt about glaucoma, you will be advised to go through more in-depth investigations such as optic nerve photo, computerized visual field test and three-dimensional structural analysis of your optic nerves (HRT).

Early diagnosis of cataracts can also be an important factor in the maintenance of health of your eyes. When the lens of the eye appears cloudy or opaque, it is called cataract. If cataracts are diagnosed, we'll advise you of the next steps to take. The doctor will also look inside your eyes. If we detect any sign of a systemic disease such as diabetes, high blood pressure, or atherosclerosis (caused by high cholesterol), you will be referred to an appropriate health care professional to determine treatment. Special testing may be recommended to check for corneal distortion, astigmatism, dry eye, and neurological diseases.

Eye Surgeon Consultation Checklist

Sometimes, it's hard to remember every question you may have about your eyesight and vision correction surgery. This is a short list of important questions to ask and areas of concern to cover with your eye care professional at your initial consultation.

When you call to schedule an appointment with the eye doctor:

  • Prepare a short, concise description of your vision problems

  • Before you call the doctor's office, call your insurance company to be sure that your eye doctor is a participating member in your plan. Then, call your doctor's office to inquire about the accepted insurance coverage. At this time you should ask the cost of the exam, based on your insurance coverage.
  • Ask if you'll need a ride from the consultation. Oftentimes, a topical solution is applied to the eyes, which makes the muscles in the eyes relax during the examination.

Before your examination, be sure to prepare:

  • Specific symptoms you're having, such as 'curtains' over your eyes, flashes of light, temporary blindness, difficulty seeing or driving at night, etc.)

  • A record of any eye injuries, damage or prior surgeries

  • A list of all prescription or over the counter drugs you take

  • Health and medical history including any major illness, disease or prior surgical procedures

  • Any family history of eye disease, such as glaucoma, cataracts, or macular degeneration

Be sure to bring to your consultation:

  • Any prescription glasses or 'cheaters' you may use

  • Previous eye correction prescriptions

  • Your medical insurance cards and vision insurance cards

Eye Surgery USA is your ultimate resource for information on eye correction surgery and searching for the best eye correction surgeons in your area.

95 Percent of LASIK Patients Report Satisfaction

According to a global study conducted by the international body of scientific literature and reported by the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery (ASCRS) more than 95% of LASIK patients are satisfied with vision.

LASIK has been performed on over 16.3 million patients worldwide, backed up by more than a decade of clinical study and progressive technological advances, LASIK ranks among the most successful elective procedures today.

"We find that there is solid evidence in the world's scientific literature to affirm that there is an exceptionally high level of satisfaction in patients who have had LASIK surgery," said Richard Lindstrom, M.D., president of ASCRS.

Key findings from the study include:
  • 95.4% of LASIK patients worldwide report satisfaction with the outcome of their procedure.

  • Approximately the same percentage would recommend LASIK to a friend or would elect to undergo the procedure again.

  • More than 95.2% of LASIK patients in the U.S. are satisfied with the outcome of their procedure.

  • Outside the U.S., studies from France, India, Iran, Ireland, The Netherlands, Scotland, South Africa, Spain, Turkey, United Arab Emirates, and The United Kingdom report very similar patient satisfaction rates of about 95.6%.

  • The total range of satisfaction rates in individual studies was from 87.2% to 100%.

3-Minute Procedure Helps Baby Boomers Read without Bi-Focals

It happens to everyone sooner or later:

You can't read a book unless you hold it at arm's length.

You have to ask a friend to help you peruse a menu.

Oliver Besnoin noticed his vision was headed south the day the stock market data he obsessively watches scroll across his computer screen was simply too small to read. Even so, he balked at wearing bifocals.

"I was not ready for that. That's not me," says the 47-year-old former fashion model, who races motorcycles in his spare time. CK is not cheap-it costs up to $2,500 and is not covered by insurance. Unlike LASIK, which uses a laser to slice and reshape the cornea, CK doesn't involve cutting (see box). Instead, a tiny probe applies radio waves in a circular pattern just below the surface of the eye. The radio waves act like a belt reshaping the cornea into a perfect circle, improving its contour and allowing light to focus properly on the back of the eye.
